Weather impacts so many aspects of our lives, from the safety of flight to the outcome of legal disputes and even daily activities. But how do we know the weather data we rely on is trustworthy? That’s where certified weather data come in. These products provide verified, official weather information that can be crucial in high-stakes situations. Today, I want to share why certified weather products are indispensable and how you can obtain certified weather data when you need it most.
What Are Certified Weather Products and Why Do They Matter?
Certified weather products contain historical meteorological data that has been reviewed and certified by climatologists at the National Center for Environmental Information (NCEI) in Asheville, North Carolina. When a customer orders historical weather data from NCEI, they have the option to receive certain data as certified.
When ordering certified weather data from NCEI, that data is reviewed and validated by one of the center's staff climatologists. The NECI's Records Custodian then affixes a certificate of accuracy to that data before it is sent to the customer. The NCEI charges a fee for certified weather data, which is based on the page count of the data being ordered.
It's important to note that not all historical weather records held by NCEI are "certifiable." This is where the Forensic Meteorologist must apply their knowledge, expertise, and sound judgment to render and expert opinion on the validity of such data while considering the totality of the available meteorological information for a given scenario.

The Role of Certified Weather Data in Litigation
The requirement for certified weather data in legal matters varies widely across the United States. Federal courts generally require expert witnesses to submit formal reports that use meteorological data certified by NCEI. In contrast, many state courts have less formal requirements for expert witnesses, and rely more heavily on the expert's opinion and supporting data and the methodology used to render that opinion. Moreover, state courts are more inclined to accept meteorological data that has been analyzed and validated by an Forensic Meteorologist, provided they detail the methodology used to validate the data before it is accepted into evidence. Similarly, most insurance carriers will not require NCEI-certified weather data while handling a claim, but will rely on the expert opinions rendered by Forensic Meteorologists.
If you're in doubt if NCEI-certified weather data is required, check with the judge presiding over your case.
How to Get a Certified Copy of a Weather Report?
Obtaining certified weather data can be accomplished in two ways. First, you can contact a weather service provider, who will do the leg-work of obtaining the certified weather data from NCEI and forward it to you. Alternatively, if you're familiar with navigating NCEI's vast collection of historical weather data, you can order certified weather data directly from NCEI. As mentioned above, certified weather data includes official documentation that includes a seal or signature from NCEI staff verifying authenticity and accuracy.
Here’s a simple step-by-step guide:
Identify the provider - Choose a reputable certified weather service. For example, PAGCORE Solutions LLC specializes in providing certified weather reports tailored to legal and other needs.
Specify the details - Provide the exact date, time, and location for the weather data you need. Precision is key to ensure the report matches your requirements.
Receive and verify - Once you receive the certified weather report, check for official markings such as a certification stamp, signature, or digital verification code.
Use as needed - Certified reports can be submitted as evidence or kept for personal or business records.
Many providers also offer consulting services to help interpret the data or customize reports for specific cases. This added support can be invaluable when dealing with complex weather scenarios.
Practical Benefits of Using Certified Weather Reports
The advantages of certified weather reports go beyond just accuracy. Here are some practical benefits that make them indispensable:
Legal credibility: Certified reports are admissible in court and trusted by judges and lawyers.
Insurance claims: Certified weather data can support or refute claims related to weather damage.
Data validation: Weather station owners can compare their readings with certified reports to ensure their equipment is working correctly.
Risk management: Businesses can use certified weather data to plan operations and reduce weather-related risks.
Choosing the Right Certified Weather Service Provider
Not all certified weather services are created equal. When selecting a provider, consider these factors:
Reputation and expertise: Look for providers with a strong track record in your industry.
Data sources: Ensure they use reliable and multiple data inputs.
Customization options: Some providers tailor reports to specific needs, which can be a big plus.
Customer support: Responsive service can help you get the right data quickly.
Certification standards: Verify that their certification process meets industry or legal requirements.
Certified weather services are more than just a convenience - they are a necessity in many professional fields. Whether you are navigating the skies, resolving legal disputes, or managing your home weather station, having access to verified, certified weather data can make all the difference. Next time you need weather information you can trust, consider the value of certified weather reports and the peace of mind they bring.
